McLaren and Athletic Propulsion Labs Launch Equally Quick HySpeed Sneaker

We hope our mate Daniel Ricciardo will be wearing these in his McLaren (or Alpine) Formula 1 car next season to give him a few extra tenths because these shoes look quick. Athletic Propulsion Labs and McLaren Automotive collide for an all-new silhouette, rooted in technology as you would expect, and designed to work as a performance shoe under all conditions. So basically, just like the car then… Arriving in five colourways, the shoe even mimics the tread pattern of the tire.

We love the fact the brands have created a completely new silhouette here with the HySpeed. All too often we see unoriginal designs copping the brand’s logos and it rarely comes off as genuine. Thankfully, in the case of the HySpeed, the shoe goes to lengths to incorporate aspects of the McLaren Supercar from the tire tread on the outsole to the microfibre heel with extended wings and an internal advanced fitment system with three-piece cushion heel padding and APL’s signature Souffle Sockliner.

In terms of comfort, the APL x McLaren HySpeed features a three-piece segmented midsole with APL FutureFoam pods in the front and rear that are connected by a full-length lightweight carbon fibre plate topped by an all-new nitrogen-infused midsole compound that is engineered for supreme responsiveness and energy-rich compression. Sound technical? Wait until you read about the car the shoe is based on.

“From original sketch to retail product launch, there have been three unique midsole iterations with proprietary compounds developed, multiple brand-new upper constructions using a wide variety of materials, and over 50 colourways sampled. The HySpeed is truly an exercise in design and engineering excellence that was created by pushing the limits of what is possible in footwear,” said Goran Ozbolt, Acting Design Director, McLaren Automotive.

“The HySpeed is the culmination of years of work but is only the beginning of a long-term collaboration between APL and McLaren,” said Adam Goldston and Ryan Goldston, APL Co-Founders.

The McLaren Automotive x APL ‘HySpeed’ sneakers cost $744 AUD, and to get your hands on a pair check out the link below.
