Salehe Bembury x New Balance 574 YURT Has an Actual Heel Whistle
The whistle shoe officially hit retail stores this morning across Australia and sold out in record time. Putting the emphasis on the kind of year New Balance is having in the sneaker space with high calibre and well-executed collaborations in partnership with industry leaders – if you don’t recognise them by now, well, you probably should.
Following the successful release of two New Balance x Salehe Bembury 2002R colourways the pair teamed up to launch a trail running style shoe. The hype was driven around the inclusion of a seriously poignant heel tab that doubles as a literal whistle. Dubbed the 574 YURT, Salehe Bembury dropped a limited clothing capsule in line with the sneaker, some of which is still available via the link below.

The 574 YURT reimagines the classic and archival New Balance 574 model and strips back almost any immediate resemblance with a modern outdoor flare. Further inspiration from other models can be seen throughout the design, including the Test Run 3.0, 990v3, and archived 755. A stylish but functional trail shoe at its core, the 574 YURT also comes complete with a first in footwear, high pitch whistle on the heel. It’s frankly more of a gimmick a functional piece of outdoor safety and survival gear, but it’s a cool feature nonetheless. Just don’t post yourself blowing the damn shoe on Instagram, please.
“Safe to say, none of us were whistle experts walking into this. But at New Balance, we honor function at every level and the team was committed to finding the right balance between a visually compelling and functionally sound device – key point being that the whistle did need to sound right at then end of the day,” said Salehe Bembury.
While we can wholesomely disagree on the function status, we can’t argue with style. Salehe uses earth tones and bright colours to capture the outdoors in both designs. We’re a sucker for any sneaker with rough suede, and the addition of a technical and statement-making outsole does wonders for the design of the shoe. In many ways, while this sneaker is clearly designed for the outdoors, it speaks more to the changing trend in fashion (i.e. Salomon XT’s hitting the runway) than trail running itself.
While there are still a few pairs sitting on some sites around the country at the time of writing, your best bet is to hop into the secondary market and pick up a pair for yourself. The apparel collection (price from AU$80) includes pants, shirts, and hoodies, all of which are stylish, dually functional, and in stock right now via the link below.
