Back in the 1960s, a new approach to tightening seals in diver watches was developed. This approach used the pressure created by the water itself to keep seals tight and the water out, and led to the name “super compressor.” Alpina was one of the companies creating super compressors. Today, Alpina is revisiting that design with a tribute watch done in bronze.
The watch itself measures 42mm wide and 12.3mm thick. Like other “super compressor” watches, the Seastrong Diver Heritage Bronze has two crowns and an inner rotating bezel. The first crown is used for normal setting and winding, while the other crown is used for the rotation of the inner bezel.
Though technically not a “super compressor,” the bronze edition makes use of the same design and, with the help of modern advances, still achieves a 300-meter water resistance (100 meters deeper than the original version).
A Sellita SW200 automatic Swiss movement was chosen for the bronze edition. The watch features time and date, as well as a 38-hour power reserve and 26 jewels. Rather than in the traditional position at 3:00, the date window on the bronze watch is located at 3:45. The bronze of the watch isn’t actually bronze, but rather steel that has been with a “bronze colour PVD.”
As such, it will preserve its bronze colour and not develop a patina over time like actual bronze would. The hands are plated in rose gold and treated with a beige luminous treatment, and the watch comes with both a rubber and a brown leather strap. The dial comes in a rich chocolate brown that plays nicely off of the bronze. Combined with the leather strap, the watch looks both elegant and manly.
Alpina’s Seastrong Diver Heritage watch in bronze retails at a suggested price of USD$1,795.
