Usually, when you’re talking about high end watches, you’re referring to timepieces made in Switzerland and other European countries, not necessarily Australia. But that all changed less than a decade ago when Christophe Hoppe founded Bausele. Their new Oceanmoon IV puts them squarely in competition with those traditional horological giants, and much like those competitors, this watch is a limited edition with only 50 examples being made.

Bausele, a name inspired by the company’s mission statement of Beyond Australian Elements, always works in a bit of Australia into their watches. For the Oceanmoon IV, Bausele turned to Uluru, one of Australia’s most readily recognized landmarks. The famous landmark is represented by the degrade sunray dial, but to live up to the “beyond” portion of their mission statement, Bausele also includes some “actual” red earth from Uluru on the display in the hollow crown at 4H.
As timeless as Uluru is, this timepiece accurately measures out time thanks to Swiss made STP1-11 automatic movement. This movement features 26 jewels as well as an Incabloc shock system and a Nivaflex mainspring. The watch comes with 44 hours of power reserve and operates at 28,800 vibrations. The case is made from surgical grade 316L stainless steel with a gun metal IP finish. Bausele promises that the sapphire crystal face “cannot be scratched or broken”—which is a strong statement toward the watch’s durability. You also get 200m of water resistance and a strap made from ocean waste.
Bausele offers the Oceanmoon IV in five colourways—green, white, silver, black, and blue—in their regular versions, but the Watchfest Pax 2020 with the Uluru red dial is a limited edition. You can get an Oceanmoon IV for $1,2000 AUD. When you do get one, you’ll find out why Australia will soon be added to the list of countries known for horological masterpieces.
