MAD Paris Strips the AP Royal Oak for a Fashion Icon
American designer and entrepreneur, and co-founder of the fashion brand 1017 ALYX 9SM, Matthew Williams took to Instagram to show off a bespoke timepiece that ties directly into his design ethos. The customised Audemars Piguet Royal Oak received its bespoke treatment at the hands of the artisans in the Parisian luxury watch customizer shop, MAD Paris. The watch was stripped down of almost all of its identifiers and then kept elegantly simple while retaining the iconic AP look.

The 1017 ALYX 9SM Silver MAD Paris Edition customized Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch is built around a hand-polished and satin-brushed stainless steel round case. The case measures 34mm in diameter and is 9mm thick. It comes on a stainless steel bracelet with a two-tone press-release clasp done in silver and gold. The watch features a three-hand movement with a date window at three o’clock.
The face is completely simple, with no markings other than the AP and 1017 ZLYX 9SM logos. Mad kept the iconic octagonal shape with the screws in the bezel for the watch, so while it may not have all the branding, it is still unmistakably an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The crystal is flat and the watch has a 50m water resistance. The watch comes in a crush-proof Pelican storage case.
The plan is to only make 40 of these customized watches, making them ultra-rare, which will contribute to a higher price tag. Not that the watch needs any help there. The Silver Mad Paris Edition customised Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch is priced at USD$81,000. For that price, you’ll get a very limited edition watch that espouses the ideals of Matthew Williams’ 1017 ALYX 9SM with the help of MAD Paris.
