Swiss watchmaker OMEGA is partnering with sailing team Alinghi for a new high-seas-inspired timepiece. The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon is said to demonstrate the values of both brands and has high performance and precision to back it up.
OMEGA colour coded the watch to match the Alinghi yacht, with red representing passion and black is for technology. The 44.25mm case is made from black zirconium oxide ceramic with a tachymeter scale in Super-LumiNova. The Alinghi logo is also present on the stop/start pusher along with a perforated black and red rubber strap to match.
At 3 o’clock, a tactical time subdial in red helps with precision on the water. At 6 o’clock, the traditional subdial design has been replaced with a sandblasted and anodized aluminium disc, which features the Alinghi logo and rotates on the watch when the chronograph function is in use.
OMEGA equipped this Speedmaster with the Calibre 1865 manual-winding movement for its lighter, thinner design. Visible through the caseback, the mainplate and barrel bridge have been given a honeycomb effect, similar to the interior of the Alinghi’s carbon hull. This special edition Speedmaster has a power reserve of 48 hours and is water-resistant to 5 bar (50 metres).
“The new watch is about two great Swiss brands combining their passion for innovation and sailing,” said Raynald Aeschlimann, the CEO of OMEGA.
“To match Alinghi’s state-of the-art boat creation, we’ve harnessed some truly impressive technology, along with the best materials and a very original design concept.”
OMEGA became Alinghi’s team sponsor in 2019 and has already enjoyed racing success thanks to the team’s GC32 world title in June 2019, D35 Trophy win in September and GC32 championship in November.
The OMEGA x Alinghi Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon edition is available now priced at AU$16,500.00 and is accompanied by a matching display case.
