Iconic Swiss luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer has revived an icon, announcing the classic Night Diver will return in 2021. Best known for its cameo on James Bond’s wrist in the 1987 Timothy Dalton-led thriller The Living Daylights, the dive watch has become a fan favourite, with reissues and revamped models fetching major dollars, but after a few years in wait, TAG Heuer has unloaded a new iteration. The all-black, lume-dialled Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver takes things in a decidedly darker direction, and no one is complaining.
The new release comes just months after TAG unveiled the new Aquaracer Professional 300 Series during Watches and Wonders. Perfectly walking the line between technology and heritage the 2021 Night Diver takes the best of the classic design, such as the famous 12-sided bezel and horizontal engraved lines on the dial and fuses them with the Aquaracer Professional 300’s versatile new technology.
From a design perspective, the Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver fits the bill. The new piece is delivered in a sharp black suit, with the stainless-steel case, bezel, crown, caseback and clasp all coated in matt black diamond-like carbon, known as DLC, best-used use in extreme conditions. Inside, TAG has opted to wrap the bezel insert in a highly resistant black ceramic.
But what makes the Nigth Diver stand out is the fully luminescent dial, which is coated in green Super- LumiNova to deliver glow-in-the-dark performance. For low-light conditions, the watch’s minute and central seconds hands are filled with blue lume to contrast with the green of the dial.
Additionally, the hour hand and octagonal hour markers at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock are filled with green lume, and the remaining octagonal hour markers are all edged with black lacquer. TAG Heuer also confirmed that the triangle on the unidirectional rotating bezel at 12, which is crucial to accurately and safely measure dive times, is also filled with striking blue lume to match the blue of the minute and central seconds hands.
As with its stablemates, the new Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver is powered by TAG Heuer’s Calibre 5 automatic movement. It features a solid caseback stamped with the iconic scaphander diving suit, complete with a 12-sided faceplate. The Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver is available to purchase for AUD$4,800.
