Race cars undergo the occasional upgrade and so do watches. That brings us to TAG Heuer’s new Carrera Calibre 16, which delivers a much-welcomed slate of modernised touch-ups. Like its distinguished predecessors, this one encapsulates the world of motorsport while nevertheless doubling as a stylish timepiece in its own right. It comes available in four iterations and makes for a brilliant addition to the brand’s already formidable collection of Carrera watches.
Revamped to bold effect, the 41mm TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 strikes an aesthetic balance between sporty style and casual elegance. That’s joined by the kind of power and performance that only Swiss-made mechanics can deliver. Throw in supreme comfort, enhanced legibility, and the swift functionality you’ve come to expect from a Carrera and this new model checks every box.
As mentioned, the newly designed dial face—which comes in either sunray black or sunray blue—is more legible than ever before. Specifically, the counters on the chronograph subdials are slightly larger than previous models and more pronounced as a result. Along similar lines, the Calibre 16 eschews SuperLuminova dots at each index, opting to fill every marker with luminescent material instead.
Providing further enhancement is a dash of colour on the tips of the central seconds hand, subdial hands, start/stop pusher, and flange from 12 to 3 o’clock. All these subtle variations go a long way in terms of improving legibility and visibility, something no racecar driver would argue with.
Despite its case size, the new Carrera Calibre 16 serves up a sleeker and thinner appearance than its legendary precursors. This is because TAG Heuer instaled shorter lugs and, furthermore, enhanced the balance between brushed and polished finishes. Not only does that mean the watch is more versatile on a purely visual front, but it’s also more comfortable to wear.
What’s more, TAG Heuer has done away with the metal ring around the edge of the ceramic bezel. Again, this lends the watch itself a more dynamic sense of character, taking it off the race track and putting it in the office or bar or anywhere in between. While its motorsport origins and sporty vibe persist, the watch arguably flirts with dressiness. We’re not saying you should rock this thing to your next black-tie affair, but it will look damn good under the lights of an upscale lounge or restaurant, especially when paired with a proper get-up.
Among the four iterations, our eyes gravitated toward the blue dial with a light brown calfskin leather strap. It’s a classic combination that TAG Heuer has reintroduced to the Carrera family. Featured on the strap is stitching and lining in the colour of subtle orange, matching the dial accents. Naturally, the blue sunray dial with stainless steel bracelet is just as impressive, as is the sunray black dial with either stainless steel bracelet or perforated leather strap with red stitching. You really can’t go wrong.
Under the skin of TAG Heuer’s latest Carrera is automatic Calibre 16. The brand excels at Swiss-made automatic movements and this one is no exception. Measuring in at a diameter of 30.4mm, it delivers 25 jewels, rapid date correction, an oscillating frequency of 4 Hz, and a 42-hour power reserve. It’s housed under a stamped caseback, which bears the collection name along with a signature tyre track pattern.
When the Carrera collection was first introduced in 1963, it helped cement the iconic bond between TAG Heuer and the world of motorsport. Alongside models like the Autavia and Monaco, it continues to carry this bond well into the 21st century. The word Carrera translates to “race” or “career” and each model accordingly aims for those who follow their own path. With releases like the new Calibre 16, that concept leaps off the race track and into the everyday world. Strap up and go.
