Zenith and Extreme E Racing Clash for Limited Edition Chronograph

To mark the arrival of cutting-edge off-road racing series Extreme E held in South America – pitting electric rally cars against Chile’s Atacama Desert – official timekeeper Zenith has released its third Extreme E limited edition model. With a production run of only twenty watches, and a design that puts sustainability and environmental awareness in the limelight, the watch offers an exciting blend of old and new. The Zenith DEFY Extreme E Copper X Prix harnesses the power of a traditional Swiss chronograph movement while also including parts recycled from the eco-friendly championship. It’s an outstanding release that hints at the future of both motor racing and watchmaking.

A quick glance at this collaborative piece shows there’s a lot happening – some obvious and some hidden beneath the surface. It’s a strong design that mixes styles and materials, something we’re always keen to explore. Take the case, it’s crafted from lightweight and hard-wearing carbon, with the distinctive twelve-sided bezel forged from microblasted titanium. The angular construction and a colour palette of earthy tones reference the region’s copper mines and rocky landscape.

The dial is busy, but symmetrical, and boasts chronograph subdials and cutout sections, revealing the exquisite mechanical movement below. If you like engines then the movement is a real treat and can be seen in even better detail through the sapphire crystal exhibition back. The watch’s eye-catching industrial aesthetic definitely caught our attention, but it’s the beating heart of this watch that highlights the superior workmanship that Zenith brings to the table.

Zenith’s El Primero 9004 movement is described as “the fastest automatic high-frequency chronograph calibre in production”. It can measure 1/100th of a second and is equipped with two escapements that beat independently.

In keeping with the eco-friendly ethos of Extreme E – its race locations are selected to call attention to climate change – Zenith has introduced upcycled and recycled elements to this model. The rubber strap is fashioned from Continental Cross Contact tires previously used in the championship’s first season. The rugged packaging is also upcycled and includes a lid coating made from E-grip tires, and the plate covering is manufactured from an Extreme E racing tarpaulin.

With a limited release of only twenty watches, not many people are going to get the chance to wear the Zenith DEFY Extreme E Copper X Prix. If you want to be one of the lucky few, the watch is available to pre-order now and is priced at AUD$39,000.
