There’s no doubt you’ve heard the name Ermenegildo Zegna. An entrepreneur and visionary whose name’s attached to one of the top fashion labels in the world, but one whose true spirit resides high in the Biella Alps, in Northern Italy. Established in 1993 with an area of 100 square kilometres, Oasi Zegna is a free-access natural territory with roots that date back to the 1930s when Ermenegildo Zegna planted over 500,000 trees in a bid to improve the welfare of the community by creating a tourist destination and natural park.
One hundred and ten years later and the territory is now a lifestyle getaway, winner of the prestigious FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano (think heritage listed site), and inspiration for some of the best garments money can buy in the brands AW22 Oasi Cashmere Collection. Let’s take a closer look.
Zegna Oasi
The Project
While he was in the process of creating one of the best fashion labels on the planet (the Zegna Wool Mill was born on May 11th 1910) Ermenegildo Zegna began devoting himself to social and welfare work. The founder went ahead and planted over half a million trees in the hope of creating a real ‘green thought’ where relationships between man, mountain, culture and nature would be preserved for the benefit of generations to come – they were and are. Even after his death in 1966, Zegna left a lasting memory by way of the natural territory that would be recognised for decades to come.
The Forest
In 2020, Zegna launched the Zegna Forest Project, a multistage project that would safeguard the territory for another 110 years and build on the 50ha. Currently undergoing chapter three of the project, the role of selective felling, hauling, planting, and care is of utmost priority. In 2022, the Zegna Forest project is being extended to a new area of 18 hectares in the Stavello zone. After undertaking the clean-up phase, the team will begin planting over 8,000 new trees, mainly beech and silver fir, to increase the forest’s resilience, ecological functions and biodiversity.
