Australia’s Top Google Searches in 2018

As U2 so wisely said, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. But obviously that song was written before Google, and if they were to write it today, it would be called, “I Googled It And Found It Instantly, That’s Quite A Relief”.

To prove the point, Google has released its annual Google Search Lists, which lay out exactly what Australians were looking for – and hopefully finding – in 2018. The results may surprise you, although probably not, as you were most likely one of the people searching for this stuff.

The overall winner in search this year was the World Cup, followed by the Commonwealth Games, proving once and for all that the Commonwealth Games truly is an event made to be number two. Given the Games were held in Australia and featured many Australian victories, and the World Cup was held in Russia and featured an Australian team without a snowball’s chance in hell, it shows just how pervasive this newfangled “soccer” thing is. At no. 3 on the overall search list was Meghan Markle, which makes sense because, I mean…who IS she, anyway?

The Royal Wedding was also no. 1 in searches for “news events” – for a given definition of “news”, anyway. We Aussies just love a royal wedding, and I guess there’s no way to stop that. Other news events to be searched en masse included feelgood stories like the Thai cave rescue, feelbad stories like the California fires, and feelnothingjustmakeitstop stories like the Wentworth by-election.

The three most-searched Australians in 2018 were Barnaby Joyce, Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton, which is depressing as hell. You have to get to number four till you get to anyone half-decent, in Billy Slater, and then it’s straight back to bad news with Craig McLachlan at number 5. In 2019 we really need to lift the standard of searchable celebrities.

Of course Google also educated us in 2018, with popular informational searches including “what is bitcoin” and “what is blockchain” – good luck on actually finding a comprehensible explanation, mind you – and “how to” quests including “how to buy bitcoin” and “how to cook corned beef”, which is a grim depiction of the modern life cycle if ever I saw one.
