The formula is pretty straightforward – two pictures from popular culture to sum up expectations vs reality. The expectations are fun and exciting and the reality is far bleaker.
“The meme indicates that people are coming to terms with the fact that the forthcoming season may look devastatingly like the ones that came before it,” said Heather Woods, an assistant professor of rhetoric and technology at Kansas State University who has done research on memes told The New York Times. “It suggests that folks recognise that the light at the end of the tunnel remains many months away.”
The meme expert isn’t wrong. Over the course of the last 18 months, coronavirus memes of all kinds have taken off online. From “my plans/2020” to “don’t worry about what’s in the vaccine”, millennials and Gen Z have increasingly turned to humour as a method of getting through the hard times.
