Cinco de Mayo has never been much of a thing down under, at least not as much as it is in the states, which is silly, because if there’s two things we love it’s getting sloppy on tequila and raving about Danny Trejo films. Purveyors of perpetual party Patron are looking to change that, and are herein sharing the recipe for this year’s winner of their annual ‘Margarita of The Year’ competition.
The Coralina Margarita by Riesler Morales, who hails from Mexico, emerged as the favourite for 2017. “We obviously didn’t invent the margarita, but with imaginative, talented bartenders like Riesler Morales creating locally inspired interpretations featuring Patron Tequila, we have arguably perfected it,” says Lee Applbaum, Patron’s Global Chief Marketing Officer.
Inspired by an ocean sunset, the Coralina Margarita combines the oaky notes of Patron Reposado, perfectly balanced with the citrusy flavours of Patron Citronge Orange and add finishing touches of red wine and hibiscus. A sugar-salt rim rounds out a truly unique commingling of these unique flavours, making for a cracking bevvo that you should give a turn for today’s festivities.
The Coralina Margarita:
50ml Patron Reposado tequila
20ml Patron Citronge orange liqueur
30ml fresh lime juice
20ml simple syrup
15ml red wine (Mexican, or other) + sugar-salt rim*
Combine Patron Reposado tequila, Patron Citronge Orange liqueur, simple syrup and lime juice in a shaker tin, add ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail coupe rimmed with sugar-salt rim*. Carefully float red wine on the surface of the cocktail.
*Sugar-salt rim: pulverize .25 cup dried hibiscus in a spice grinder. Add 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup salt and pulse until combined.
