The Chainsmokers are Rocketing to Space for Upcoming Gig

We hope the Aliens like electro music because The Chainsmokers just landed a gig in space. No, we aren’t kidding; the famous duo have signed up to hop inside a pressurized capsule tethered to a stratospheric balloon and perform roughly 20 miles above the Earth. Launching (pun intended) in 2024, the feat would make band members Drew Taggart and Alex Pall the first artists to perform at the edge of space. As the iconic astronaut Neil Armstrong once said: “One small step for man, one giant leap for bangers.

The team responsible for flying them to their galactic stage is fledgling space tourism company World View. Founded in 2013, the US-based company is part of a new wave of private space exploration firms offering seats to the public, a list that includes Blue Origin, SpaceX and Virgin Galactic. Each World View balloon capsule is projected to seat eight passengers and reach a peak altitude of 100,000 feet (30,480 metres during the six to 12-hour flight.

Understandably excited, the band plans to make the most of their time while floating among the stars. “We have always dreamed of going to space and are stoked to collaborate with World View to have this adventure and experience,” said The Chainsmokers in a statement. “We know the views of both Earth and space are going to be incredible and inspiring, and we hope to leverage this flight for creativity on future projects.”

World View CEO Ryan Hartman said that while most of the people who have made space flights are scientists and engineers, sending up the musicians could “inspire them to do something different than they would have otherwise done.”

“We think about inspiring new perspectives and how those new perspectives can lead to a radically improved future for our Earth,” said Hartman. “To be able to reach the audience of The Chainsmokers through Alex and Drew’s work contributes to our mission as well. It’s something that I’m personally inspired by and excited about.”

If you find yourself asking, “why The Chainsmokers, though?” The answer is part personal and part business. Hartman said he once caught his son belting out the lyrics from the duo’s songs and was inspired by the band’s popularity. From there, he reached out to the pair and explained the flight plans over dinner.

“I have just seen firsthand and personally how their music reaches a lot of different groups, a lot of different age groups and just how passionate they are about their music and their art. It matches our passion for what we do,” he said.

Undoubtedly popular, The Chainsmokers have had five Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including Closer Paris, Don’t Let Me Down, and Something Just Like This with Coldplay in 2017.

Enjoy the show, E.T.
