Hunter Valley Shiraz Spirit Tastes of Campfires

The effects of the 2019-2020 bushfires in Australia can still be felt, but just like the old saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. In this case, Archie Rose Distilling Co. is using “salvaged smoke tainted grapes” in a new three-part series of Eau de Vie to support the Hunter Valley wine community. The new series will be packaged as the second release in Archie Rose’s Trials & Exceptions Series.

The new Eau de Vie is made from over 50 tonnes of smoke-tainted Hunter Valley 2020 shiraz and cabernet sauvignon grapes. Much of the spirits that come from these grapes will be aged and then released as brandy in coming years. Archie Rose worked with Tulloch Wines and First Creek Wines to identify smaller growers in the Pokolbin, Broke Fordwich, and Upper Hunter regions of the Hunter Valley to provide the raw materials.

“While watching the January bushfires this year, we immediately began looking at how we could help growers only two hours up the road with the eventual result a series of brandy related spirits. As Eau de Vie is a spirit very few people have tried, we’re really excited to share this Hunter Valley Shiraz Spirit and looking forward to seeing how the smoke taint eventually plays into a brandy, currently laid down in casks to age for a minimum of two years,” says Harriet Leigh, Archie Rose head of hospitality.

The Hunger Valley Shiraz Spirit will be available in 1,000 bottles and will go on sale May 25 for $99. You can get a bottle from the Archie Rose Bar in Rosebery, or you can order it online through the Archie Rose web site. You can also pre-purchase a bottle of the brandy, which is priced at $219. The Eau de Vie comes with savoury and sweet tasting notes, coming across as shortbread, icing sugar, vine leaves, and a campfire. There are also notes of tropical fruits, crème Fraiche, and berries. Archie Rose suggests drinking it with fresh-pressed apple juice or with Coca-Cola and freshly squeezed lime juice.
