The Macallan Masters of Photography Limited Release brings together the art of whisky making and photography. The collection started in 2008, and has explored the works of six world-renowned Magnum photographers. The first chapter looked at the work of Rankin, a pre-eminent Scottish-born photographer famous for his creative portraiture and ability to capture the character and spirit of his subjects. The second was Albert Watson, who followed the journey of the oak casks used for distilling the whisky. Annie Leibovitz was the subject of the third chapter. Leibovitz is best known for her work with luxury and celebrity. In 2013, Elliot Erwitt contributed a chapter that celebrated Scotland. The fifth photographer was Mario Testino. Testino shot his photos in The China Club in Beijing, near the Forbidden City and Tian’anmen Square. The sixth edition was put together by Steven Klein, who is known as one of the most challenging and provocative artists in photography and film. The seventh and final chapter celebrates the opening of a new Macallan distillery and visitors center with the photoraphs of six photographers: Steve McCurry, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Mark Power, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, and Alec Soth.
The whisky was put together by Macallan Whisky Maker Sarah Burgess, who created a single malt from the combination of eight casks. Each of the casks brought a different flavor to the whiskies. From there, the whiskies were partnered with the photographers that best matched that distillations characteristics.
