Nikka Whisky 2021 Discovery Series

Nikka Whisky ‘Challenges Preconceptions’ with Two Limited-Edition Japanese Single Malts

To celebrate the pushing of boundaries, Japanese distillery Nikka Whisky recently unveiled its 2021 Discovery Series. The release features two specialty single malts, the Yoichi Non-Peated and the Miyagikyo Peated, each limited to 20,000 bottles worldwide. With the brand heading towards its 90th anniversary in 2024, the Discovery Series is the initial step to showcase the depth of Nikka’s whisky-making process and its attempt to keep progressing in the future.

The Single Malt Non-Peated (47%ABV) has been designed to exhibit the distillery’s diverse ingredients, consisting solely of unpeated malt whiskies. The distiller’s work results in a balance of fruitiness with a rich, oily mouth feel that expresses the coastal characteristics of the Yoichi distillery.

As for the Miyagiko Peated Single Malt (48%ABV), it’s been created entirely from batches of peated malts, deriving its flavour from malted barely while boasting fruity boldness invoked by the stills and maturation process. The distiller notes the expression combines a distinctive peaty essence with Nikka’s signature estery hints in the aftertaste.

“We are so pleased to introduce these unique expressions from our emblematic Yoichi and Miyagikyo single malts,” said Emiko Kaji, Nikka Whisky international business development manager. “It’s an exciting process, like treasure hunting, to try various whisky batches from our vast reserve guided by Nikka blenders, and to create products that embody the ‘Discovery’ concept.”

As part of the Australian launch, Nikka Whisky partnered with renowned Melbourne Japanese restaurant, Minamishima, presenting a curated menu inspired by the new range. Complimenting the rich notes of the Yoichi Single Malt, the whisky is served neat with a dry-aged duck whilst the Miyagikyo Single Malt is paired with famed David Blackmore Wagyu.

Both bottles are set to be available at a suggested retail price of USD$274.99 (AU$380.00).
