Can you believe Penfolds is celebrating 175 years of Australian winemaking? That means the founding fathers were already harvesting grapes and producing wine back in the 1840s! To celebrate this incredible milestone, Penfolds has released a new, rare wine from the 2016 vintage – the Special Bin 111A Clare Valley Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016.
Special Bin wines use only the most exceptional fruit from the very best regional sources. It has been almost a decade since Penfolds released a Special Bin wine, and the new Special Bin 111A Shiraz is a superb example of concentrated wine with balance and character.
Blended from two esteemed South Australian Shiraz vineyards, the wine is described as an altogether new style and “at once ‘special’: aromatically, structurally, texturally, and cerebrally.”
Special Bin 111A takes its name from the oak maturation stock number and is the first Special Bin blend of South Australia’s Clare Valley and Barossa Valley.
Penfolds Special Bin 111A Clare Valley Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 is available now for the RRP $1,500.00 per bottle. This wine is available from select outlets, including Penfolds’ Cellar Door.
Special Bin 111A was officially revealed at a 175th Gala event held at Penfolds Magill Estate Winery, in front of 100 VIP guests from around the world. Attendees were amongst the first in the world to taste Special Bin 111A and enjoyed acclaimed back-vintage wines to accompany the carefully curated menu.
After dinner, guests followed an illuminated red path to the Magill Estate Restaurant which had been converted into a New York-style jazz bar with a live jazz band and themed furnishings. Guest joined a special champagne toast to 175 years – featuring Thiénot x Penfolds Champagne – and watched as the vines at Magill Estate were washed red, and fireworks lit up the night sky at the foot of the Adelaide Hills.
