Going to the doctor’s office can be stressful and frustrating. Not only do you face the possibility of contracting something from the other patients, or sharing what you have with them, you also have to deal with the waiting room and the exam room. When a nurse does come in, your vitals are taken and then you have to wait for the doctor to show up just to go through many of the same steps you just went through with the nurse. TytoCare has come up with a remote medical exam kit that you can use to gather information to then share with your health provider remotely. The device, which is reminiscent of the tricorder from Star Trek, lets you perform a “remote health examination” from home so that the doctor can give you a virtual diagnosis.
Telemedicine isn’t new, but it is limited to what the doctor can see, so that means he or she can only take in what can be gleaned from the camera of your computer or your smartphone. TytoCare’s remote medical exam kit comes with several attachments, including a stethoscope, a heart rate monitor, a basal thermometer, an otoscope adapter (for examining the ears), a tongue depressor adaptor, and the TytoApp. The otoscope has a high-definition camera that you can use to show your doctor either your throat or your ear to rule out infections. The stethoscope and heart rate monitor lets your doctor gather information regarding your blood pressure and heart rate. The device is meant for acute care situations such as ear infections, sore throats, fever, flu, or stomach aches. As with any life-threatening or emergency situations, you should go to the hospital or emergency clinic to be treated.
TytoCare has partnered with a number of medical providers throughout the US, with more coming online soon. The medical exam kit can be purchased through Best Buy for $300.
