Visiting Hong Kong this month? No? Well, you may want to book tickets quick smart cause it’s the only way to get your hands on Betsy Beer. Betsy Beer is a scientifically crafted bottled beer brewed to be enjoyed at 35,000ft. It’s exclusive to Cathay Pacific flights and is named after the airline’s first aircraft, a Douglas DC-3 which flew passengers around the region in the 1940s and 1950s.
It’s no secret that cabin pressure and altitude affects your senses, dulling taste buds by up to 30%. Betsy Beer, which Cathay Pacific has produced in partnership with Hong Kong Beer Co, is created with a combination of Hong Kong and European ingredients, aromas and the necessary carbonation to taste great both in the air and on the ground. Betsy is carbonated nearly 7% higher than beer brewed at sea level. This increases the sensory experience as higher CO2 levels stimulate flavour receptors on the tongue, encouraging more enhanced senses of taste and mouth feel.
Betsy’s flavour is also unique as the inclusion of “Dragon Eye” fruit creates a distinct aroma that’s enhanced further by the addition of New Territories’- sourced honey into the brewing process, giving the beer agreeable floral notes. The use of Fuggle, a revered hop and a mainstay of traditional British craft ales, lends Betsy a pleasingly earthy and full-bodied flavour.
Betsy Beer will be served to Business Class passengers on board Cathay Pacific flights from Australia – departing Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Cairns – to Hong Kong from April 7th – April 30th, 2017. Betsy Beer will hit Australian Bottle-O’s in the future, but for now, the skies belong to the beer fanatics.
