Erik Singer’s Language and Dialect Videos

Nick Hall – Digital Editor

There’s something truly mystifying about language and the way each individual person puts their swing on it. For the past couple of years, I’ve found myself routinely swaying back to these clips from dialect coach Erik Singer. You might have seen his previous videos critiquing the accents of famous film portrayals, but this is one I hadn’t seen before. In this clip, Singer explains certain myths surrounding language and common phrases that we often hear uttered from time to time. It turns out those pesky sayings that often drive us up the wall, like ‘for all intensive purposes’ and ‘pass mustard’ actually have a use. In fact, many of the sayings we claim as being accurate now once started as mishearings.

It could just be Singer’s calming persona and perfect diction, but I always come away feeling a little better, a little more at ease and a lot smarter. If you want to know how badly you’ve been stuffing up your favourite sayings, I highly recommend these videos.

The North Face Snow Boots

The North Face NF51960 Snow Boots

Scott Purcell – Co-Founder

I only get to wear these once a year pretty much (probably even less now that COVID is here and we won’t be travelling for a while), but these North Face boots I picked up in Japan earlier this year are some of the comfiest and best snowshoes I’ve ever worn. They’re incredibly warm and unlike other big boots, super easy to slip on and off. When they’re done up they still feel sturdy and tight around your foot and ankle.

The fabric is made from water-repellent nylon and contains a lightweight Thermolite heat insulating material. The original tech proof (TM) is used for the upper lining and the shell is moulded with a lightweight EVA to improve the waterproofness of the entire shoe. A special rubber compounding glass powder is placed in the centre of the outsole to enhance the gripping performance on snow and ice.

I can only find them available on the Japanese Amazon site below but they’re crazy cheap at around AUD$122.

Scapegrace Black gin

ScapeGrace Black Gin

Denise Barnes – Native Content Manager

This is a special one. The gin isn’t called Scapegrace Black because it comes in a beautiful black bottle, no, instead, the gin itself is naturally black-ish in colour. The dark colour stems from its all-natural botanicals including Aronia berry, saffron, pineapple, butterfly pea and sweet potato – rest assured there are no added colourants. What makes it even better, although some might say slightly gimmicky, is that when you add tonic to the gin, it changes colour to shades of red and purple. It’s a great party trick, to say the least. But of course, a gin is no good if it doesn’t pass the taste test.

The New Zealand distillery describes it as having a full-bodied florality with menthol-like crispiness, balanced citrus freshness and a hint of spice with a candied sweet potato and pineapple finish. After tasting it myself, I can attest to the deliciousness of this premium gin and would highly recommend all gin lovers to try it, if you can find it that is. When the gin was first released in New Zealand, it sold out a 3-month supply in just 24 hours, so that does say something. In Australia, you should be able to buy it at Dan Murphy’s or Boozebud, but unfortunately, I’m not quite sure if and where it can be found in the States. Happy gin o’clock folks.

Entourage

Alex de Crespigny – Editorial Assistant

It’s been a hot minute since I last rewatched Entourage. The first time, I was fifteen and parked up at some boarding school in South Africa. It took me a short two weeks to watch all eight seasons. I don’t regret a thing.

Like a fine wine, the show has gotten better with age. Loosely based on Mark Whalberg’s life, the show follows Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) on his rise, fall and rise again in Hollywood. Each season is a roller coaster that sees Vincent battle the bureaucracy of the movie business, leading him to roles like Aquaman, Joey Ramone and even Pablo Escobar. The show’s rife with parallels to real life and has some truly memorable celeb cameos. If I’m completely honest, Vincent Chase is more of a plot point. What makes the show great are the antics of Johnny Drama, Turtle, E and of course Ari motherf*cking Gold.

If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a look.
