Online Searches for Bidets Are Up 350%

The spread of the coronavirus has led to a lot of changes, some good, others a bit strange. One strange result is the rush on toilet paper, which has led to a shortage and what is being labelled as a crisis as more people are struggling to find the precious commodity. Australians are seeking out alternatives in the face of the coronavirus dilemma, and that search has led them to the bidet. Searches on Google for the “bum gun” skyrocketed 350 per cent in just one week.

Online searches for bidets are up 350%

Despite a scarcity down under, bidets are surprisingly popular in other countries. Both Italy and Portugal have required the cleaning device since 1975. With the new focus on the device in Australia, suppliers are doing their best to meet the demand. The Bidet Shop, Australia’s largest supplier of bidets, has seen the increase in requests, stating, “It’s definitely gone up, lots and lots of inquiries.” Unfortunately, this new interest wasn’t expected, and there is a shortage of supply. That shortage has been compounded by a halt on imported stock due to coronavirus fears. “This is an issue we are now suffering,” a spokesperson for The Bidet Shop told 10Daily. “Special deals that have been on for a while have had to be stopped because we can’t discount things we don’t have.”

While the concerns over the coronavirus have heightened interest in bidets, the devices should be used more regularly as a matter of course. The Bidet Shop explains that they are more hygienic and better for the environment. The Bidet Shop spokesperson explains, “If you were at a barbeque and picked up a bit of dog poo and somebody gave you a hamburger to eat, would you wipe your hands with tissues or would you go and wash with water? You are a lot cleaner with water, all you are getting with toilet paper is pushing the poo into the micro-cracks of the anus.” If you didn’t know that your crack has micro-cracks, there you go, and evidently they’re not getting as clean as they could be. Maybe a gush of water will help—at least you won’t have to worry about toilet paper shortages.
