What was once a warehousing district and shipping wharf, Robertson Quay, Singapore, has evolved to become a vibrant urban destination of choice amongst tourists, business travellers and locals alike. Surrounded by art houses, exclusive condominiums, cafes, fine restaurants, wine and craft cocktail bars, Robertson Quay offers a relaxed atmosphere and a vibrant nightlife. It’s within this trendy precinct that InterContinental has built their new home-away-from-home hotel.
During our recent visit to the InterContinental in Robertson Quay, we quickly realised this hotel was different. Different in a good way. The hotel design is elegantly modern yet pays tribute to its warehouse and industrial roots. The repetition of copper finishes throughout the hotel give it a chic, modern touch, whilst it maintains a warm, cosy feeling by the inclusion of features such as visible lounge areas and coffee table books to replicate some of the comforts typically found in your own home. To further complement this, the staff are very friendly, attentive and take a seemingly genuine interest in the well-being of their guests.
Upon entering the room and gazing out through the lofty windows, we were immediately overwhelmed by the breathtaking view of the Singapore skyline. The room was inviting, cosy and purposefully designed to showcase the space in a unique way. A large open-plan bathroom enveloped with mirrors features a sleek basin and spacious countertop, which opens up into the bedroom. Both the toilet and shower are concealed behind separate walls that visually blend in with the wardrobe. Then there is the enormous television, which is quite frankly the biggest tv we’ve ever encountered in a hotel room, coupled with a Bose soundbar allowing guests to connect their own devices to the system.
The daytime hours are drenched in a glowing ambience, as natural light fills the room through it’s large floor to ceiling windows. But if it’s shade you’re looking for (especially in the wee hours of the morning after a big night), you can control the electric blinds and select from either a sheer or block-out coverage.
One of our favourite room features has to be the mini-bar set up that allows you to craft your own cocktails. You don’t know how to make a cocktail? No problem. The mini-bar is equipped with recipes, ingredients (even down to olives if you’re in the mood for a martini) and all the cocktail-making tools you’ll need. And of course, the mini-bar also has all the standard options for the less daring among us.
Club InterContinental Perks
The perks are good, real good… Club InterContinental guests are granted 24-hour access to the chic Club InterContinental Lounge. Other than the welcoming outdoor area filled with greenery and beautiful city views, the premium lounge offers a complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner service.
Breakfast consists of an a la carte option as well as a delicious spread selection of fresh pastries, cheeses, deli meats, fresh fruits, cereal, hot dishes, juices and barista served coffees. At lunchtime, a selection of non-alcoholic beverages and light meals are served. While the dinner service is particularly enjoyable as mouth-watering canapés, wines and cocktails are on offer between 6 and 8 pm. Aside from light refreshments, an evening in the lounge is an ideal place to watch the sunset before heading out for dinner or a night out on the town. In addition, the Club InterContinental Lounge is open 24 hours serving various snacks and non-alcoholic beverages between meals, which is especially convenient when you fancy a little snack when arriving late or checking out early.
As the hotel is situated on the banks of the Singapore River, another great perk is the complimentary use of their vintage-style bicycles, allowing you to take in the atmosphere and explore the 3 river-side Quays, nearby parks or venture into town. However, if pedalling through the Singaporean heat doesn’t tire you out enough, the brand new hotel fitness centre is kitted out with the latest essential gym equipment and facilities for a productive workout. And to cool down on those hot tropical days, the hotel also features a beautiful lap pool on the 4th level.
International guests will love the next one: Complimentary with every room comes an appropriately named device called “Handy”. For use throughout the entire city, the device offers full internet access (in areas where there is no wi-fi), the ability to make phone calls, has a range of discounted offers on ticketed excursions, suggestions of where to go, what to do and more. Handy is also equipped with Google maps ready to help navigate you around the city and you can even connect your own social media accounts. This means no need to buy a new sim card or chew through your phone plan’s data when you arrive, just take Handy along everywhere you go.
Other Hotel Benefits
Location, location, location. Not only is the hotel just a 5-minute drive from the CBD, it also has some of the newest, trendiest restaurants and bars just a few steps away. One such restaurant is the Italian food haven Publico Ristorante, which serves one of the best pizzas we’ve ever eaten, along with other contemporary dishes and premium cocktails. Next door to this is Publico Diner, which is a great value for money authentic Italian Diner serving delicious breakfast and lunch. Or, if you’ve got a sweet tooth, there’s also a quaint gelato stand only footsteps from the entrance of the InterContinental.
Another favourite is a speakeasy craft cocktail bar called Marcello that slings together a mean smoked Negroni and delicious bar snacks on demand. Best thing about it? It’s practically on the hotel’s doorstep. The entrance is hard to spot, so you might have to ask around, but trust us, you won’t be disappointed.
Lastly, everyone from the porter and receptionist to the hotel management and concierge, are extremely helpful, friendly and will go out of their way to provide assistance, advice and recommendations tailored to your own interests and needs. InterContinental Robertson Quay has done exceptionally well to cater for its young professional clientele. It’s trendy, well-positioned in a must-visit cosmopolitan area and has everything you would want out of a hotel stay and more. Terima kasih, thank you InterContinental Robertson Quay. Till next time.
