RIMOWA Turns their Attache Briefcase into Gold

Can you actually say something is “minimalist” when it’s gold? Whether you can or not, that’s exactly what RIMOWA is doing. Their “reimagined classic” attaché briefcase “pairs vintage sensibility with modern minimalist design” by recasting the RIMOWA Attaché Briefcase in gold.

The attached case has been around for over a century, and when it first came out it featured corner guards. The new version has done away with those guards but has kept the trademark grooves that decorate the front and back. The case is made out of aluminum and then “cast in solid gold color.” Corners and edges are rounded over and the whole case is polished to a smooth finish. Inside, the case is decked out in black Italian leather. A gusseted magnetic pocket holds all your documents while a flat card holder allows for a little extra storage. A metallic three-digit combination lock keeps everything secured away. The case measured 15.5 inches by 18 inches by 5 inches and weighs 7.5 pounds. A galvanized metal handle finishes off the look. The case was designed and engineered in Germany.

RIMOWA’s briefcases have been featured in countless spy movies throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. A recent Sotheby’s auction, “RIMOWA Archive Collection 1898-2019,” featured a vintage version of the attaché case. If you’re fan of 1990s era action and spy movies, you’ve seen a RIMOWA briefcase on the screen multiple times. The gold version is one worthy of a super villain—evidently that crowd agrees as the case is already sold out on RIMOWA’s web site. It was priced at $1,800. With this case you’ll look like the golden one coming out of the office—or you’ll end up having super spies chasing you around trying to steal the case for Queen and Country.
