Move over Disney World, The Arabic Kingdom has announced plans to create a massive new theme park called The Rig, and it looks insane. This latest project is part of Saudi Arabia’s 2030 strategy to launch the country as a major tourist destination and compete with Dubai’s already successful extreme entertainment attractions.

Located in the Arabian Gulf, middle eastern developers have planned to convert an oil rig (hence, “The Rig” title) into a massive 1.6 million-square-foot resort. Backed by the nation’s Public Investment Fund, The Rig will offer three hotels with 800 rooms, 11 restaurants, all connected by platform bridges. Furthermore, there will be several roller coasters, waterslides, submarine adventures, diving and jumping. The resort will also include one ultra-luxury hotel with helicopter arrival and a superyacht marina for travellers with deep pockets.

Touted by developers as the “world’s first tourism destination inspired by offshore oil platforms”, this could be the first theme park to help promote oil drilling and will even offer consumers a hands-on experience on how to use the oil machinery. However, for tourists who don’t want to spend their holiday working on a production well, developers claim they will “provide a multitude of hospitality offerings, adventures, and aquatic sporting experiences” that will attract people from around the world.

The Public Investment Fund has big plans for Saudia Arabia’s tourism sector; among the largest projects ‘is ‘Qiddiya’ near the capital city of Riyadh. Eclipsing Disney World, Qiddiya will become the globe’s most extensive entertainment city, with the theme park boasting the fastest rollercoaster in the world as well as the world’s largest drop tower. The city has been developed into five different areas; Resort Core, City Centre, Eco Core, Motion Core and the Golf and Residential Neighborhood. All combined, the city will house 300 various facilities, including theme parks, water parks and sporting venues.
