UBTECH’s Alpha 1 Pro is an impressive gadget. With 16 movable joints, each with a servo, it has a wide range of possible movement. Those servos also have a timing accuracy of within 0.01s and can move within a 1 degree accuracy. In other words, it moves quickly and correctly. Built out of ABS plastic, Alpha 1 Pro can take a beating, so no worries with kids playing with it. In fact, it’s a great tool to teach that budding robotics expert.
Alpha stands 16 inches tall and comes with a 3W mono speaker. You can play music or download “bedtime” stories for the Alpha to share. The battery is removable and replaceable, and has a life of about 60 minutes per charge.
It’s the programming that might be Alpha 1 Pro’s hang up. The robot has an impressive “3D visualization-based simulation,” but what is that? Well, for starters, it doesn’t seem to be an AI (Artificial Intelligence). The programming seems to more closely resemble marionette strings than C3PO. Still, this capability looks fun. Alpha 1 Pro can be programmed to dance and even exercise. It can do yoga poses, pushups, and headstands, so you can use it as an exercise buddy. You can also program a series of actions, allowing you to choreograph dances to your favorite music (which you can play through its speaker) or program in a martial arts kata. Alpha promises hours of fun, and can deliver on that.
