One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor! That’s an old tequila joke in honour of the 2017 World Tequila Awards. We hear that when it comes to these big spirits competitions there’s an air of seriousness and dedication, but nonetheless we refuse to believe the World Tequila Awards wasn’t a full-blown fiesta. As for the biggest winners, all we can say is that given the bazillion expressions on the market it’s very impressive that only three brands were represented among the top five awards. Wow. We have a feeling it’s about to become a lot harder to track down a bottle of La Serpiente Emplumada! Here’s an overview of the main winners from the 2017 World Tequila Awards.
Best Anejo – La Serpiente Emplumada
La Serpiente Emplumada won Best Anejo and Best Extra Anejo at the World Tequila Awards, arguably making this brand truly the best of the best. On top of that La Serpiente Emplumada translates to “Feathered Snake”, which is one heck of a name in both Spanish and English. In other words this spirit has basically everything going for it, including a brilliant taste. Enthusiasts and experts say the Anejo delivers smooth, earthy notes of agave balanced by light spice, fruit and oak. The finish slowly slithers away like a long serpent, leaving a sweet and buttery trail in its wake.
Best Blanco – LOKITA Silver
Here we have another fun name (Lokita loosely translates to “Crazy Girl”) along with a beautiful label design that visually captures the Day of the Dead in all its epic and gloomy glory. Behind that eye-catching label is premium silver tequila with notes fruit and pepper and a vibrant, spicy finish.
Best Extra Anejo – La Serpiente Emplumada
With two World Tequila Awards under its belt in 2017, it’s safe to say La Serpiente Emplimada is having itself an awesome year so far. Meanwhile, getting a taste of the Extra Anejo (aka Extra Aged) just made our bucket list. The honeyed colour alone is a strong indicator that there’s some rich, warm, intense flavour going on inside that bottle.
Best Joven – Casa Noble Joven
At 102 proof, Casa Noble Joven is strong, young and delicious. It’s aged for a brief six weeks and brings with it the taste of pure, earthy agave along with inviting notes of flora and fruit, mellowed out by a surprisingly smooth finish. Casa Noble Joven is also hailed as the perfect tequila for your next alcohol-forward Margarita.
Best Reposado – Casa Noble
The World Tequila Awards judges knew what they liked and they liked Casa Noble. Aged in French White Oak barrels for 364 days (the most allowed), Casa Noble Reposado is a full-bodied stunner, rife with notes of vanilla and lemongrass along with sweet cooked agave and oak.
