The Best Made Field Chest, from the Best Made Company, is based on the field chest used by renowned adventurer and inventor Robert Edison Fulton. Fulton is known for traveling the world on a motorcycle and for his aviation related inventions, for which he held 70 patents. Best Made has brought the field chest Fulton used to the public, with the help of legendary illustrator and artist Ross MacDonald. The chest was built by Gerstner & Sons of Dayton Ohio. A fourth generation, family owned woodshop, Gerstner & Sons is known for crafting heirloom quality tool chests.
The Best Made Field Chest measures 27.25 x 26 x 12 inches. The chest houses 12 drawers as well as a secret compartment behind the clock, a book shelf cubby, and two vertical storage cubbies on the doors. The drawers are lined with charcoal felt. The upper drawers are accessed by library pulls with name card slots. The other features are also brass and lower drawer pulls have been machined knurled. The clock is a custom German-made Best Made Co. clock. With so many storage options, this chest definitely adheres to the adage, “A place for everything and everything in its place.”
The materials used for this chest also testify to its quality. American cherry wood was used for the body, with polished brass hardware throughout. The chest also uses six ounce leather. If Fulton’s original chest matched this quality, it’s no wonder he took it with him on his adventures.
