BioLite SolarHome 620 Makes Off-Grid Possible

There’s no need to live in the dark anymore, thanks to BioLite’s SolarHome 620. This system’s control box comes in just a little smaller than that big textbook you lugged around to your classes (7.9 x 6.1 x 2.9 inches—it definitely weighs less than that textbook, only 1.21 pounds). Of course, you’ll have to bring in the solar panel, which is a bit bigger, but still manageable (11.4 x 7.5 x 0.6 inches). A few wires and some lights, and you have light wherever you’re going. The whole system can be packed up into a kit the size of a shoebox.

The system comes with three lights, two hanging lights and one motion sensing security light, and can put out a total of 100 lumens per light (400 total). SolarHome comes with a 20 watt hour internal battery capable of 3300mAH at 6.5V, all from a six watt solar panel. In fact, that’s where the name comes from—six watts for 20 hours = 620.

The control box also comes with a built-in radio and allows you to play your own MP3s. It has USB ports where you can charge your electronic devices.

SolarHome 620 is being used to light over 5,000 homes across western Kenya.
