Dyson is best known for their innovative approach to vacuums, but they will also soon be known for their work on lighting. Noting that natural light changes colour temperature and intensity throughout the day, Dyson has put together a light that mimics that phenomenon, which may be important to your wellbeing.
“Our bodies can be influenced by daylight’s changing spectrum of colour and brightness,” explains Jake Dyson, Chief Lighting Engineer for Dyson. “So our new light adjusts with the daylight where you live.”
The Dyson Lightcycle tracks light changes throughout the day, adjusting its colour and brightness to match the natural light. It also monitors ambient light so that it can adjust to different levels, providing you with a constant brightness. Dyson also notes that a 65-year-old person needs up to four times more light than a 20-year-old, so they’ve equipped Lightcycle with settings based on your age that are controlled with their Dyson Link app.
The Lightcycle comes with three pre-set light modes—Relax, Study, and Precision—and has a Boost button for 20 minutes of higher intensity light. Finally, you can use Lightcycle as an alarm thanks to its ability to gradually brighten in the morning, making for a more natural wake-up cycle.
Dyson also innovated a new cooling system that works to keep the LEDs at an optimal temperature. LEDs are wont to overheat, which can cause fading and discolouring. With the cooling technology, the LEDs in the Lightcycle will provide quality light for 60 years.
