The good news is that Virgil Abloh’s “KEEP OFF” rug is making its way to IKEA stores across Australia. The bad news is that you have to enter a ballot for a chance to purchase one. Abloh’s rug launches as part of “Hit the Floor,” an IKEA Art Event and limited run collection of rugs that mash-up tapestry art, handicraft, avant-garde fashion, street culture and modern design.
Each of the eight contemporary designs come from leading creatives using wool and other natural materials. Drawing from their personal experiences and inspirations, the eight designers have explored a series of different ideas and concepts.
Abloh’s contribution to the IKEA Art Event is an ironic take on overbearing parents who protect their furniture by any means necessary.
“I wanted an ironic take on the traditional attitude to furnishing where the living room is just a showroom, not somewhere you sit,” said Abloh. “The parental ‘don’t ruin the furniture’ kind of thing I think has really impacted how younger people think of furniture today,” said Abloh.
The “KEEP OFF” rug from the Louis Vuitton Men’s Artistic Director and Off-White founder is proving so popular that it’s only available through a ballot. Via the link below, IKEA Family members can register their interest with winners notified on May 13. The Ballot closes Wednesday, May 8.
The remainder of the IKEA Art Event rugs will be made available for purchase in all Australian IKEA stores for a limited time from May 15.
“IKEA Art Event 2019 challenges the traditional function and purpose of the rug, reimagining its place in the home and combining it with contemporary art,” adds Mark Mitchinson, IKEA Australia. “The collection pushes the boundaries, reviving the idea of the rug as an artwork in a modern way.”
