If you’re going to share a market space with another company, unless you’re direct competitors, eventually you’re going to have the opportunity to collaborate on a project. That’s what has happened with outdoor icons Airstream and REI. The two labels have come together to create a special edition travel trailer that offers the best of both companies.
The trailer offers a small footprint—not quite a teardrop trailer, but awfully close. The special edition trailer starts with Airstream’s Basecamp 16X, which measures just 16 feet in length. It comes outfitted with the off-road X-Package and includes a 3-inch lift kit. The trailer also features an increased departure angle, so you can feel more comfortable taking the outfit to those hard-to-reach camping sites you love.
The aluminum black wheels come with chrome detailing and are shod with Goodyear Wrangler 235/75R15 all-terrain tires. The stone guards are made of stainless steel and offer protection for that impressive panoramic glazed front. In the interior is where you’ll find REI’s contribution. The first influence comes in the colour choice—New Spruce. It is found on the rear door jamb and trim, the LP shroud, and the badging. The fabric upholstery is made of Soft Knoll fabric, which is 50 per cent post-consumer recycled polyester and is stain-repellant.
“Built ruggedly to explore and protect the outdoors, the REI Co-op Special Edition Basecamp is our most sustainable travel trailer to date,” Airstream wrote. “Constructed from environmentally friendly, lightweight materials, with innovative water conservation features and optional composting toilet and exclusive solar upgrade, your eco-footprint is not only lighter, it’s heavy on the cool factor.”
The galley top is green slate and the cabinetry is made of birch plywood. For flooring, Airstream utilized a raised-coin vinyl floor for its grip and durability. There’s a small kitchen with sink and range, and the rear dinette converts into either a bed or a half bed. There’s also a 21-gallon freshwater tank and a water filtration system.
The 2023 Airstream X REI Special Edition Camper is easily towable at just 2,700 pounds. There’s plenty of storage space throughout, including under the bed and in a lockable storage inside the entry door. It also comes with an optional rooftop solar panel system. And for the bathroom, off-the-grid campers will appreciate the composting toilet. Finally, buyers of the trailer will get a 25-piece REI Co-op + Airstream Basecamp product kit. The trailer is priced at $52,900 and can be ordered through Airstream dealers.
