Australian Championship Tour surfer Julian Wilson has two loves—surfing and skateboarding. Unfortunately, he’s never been able to combine the two. That is, until he visited Urbnsurf in Melbourne. At the adventure experience facility, Wilson took the opportunity to experience the ride of his life as he both surfed and skated on water.
The problem that Wilson always faced was the unpredictability of the ocean. Because he couldn’t accurately predict how the waves would come or behave, he couldn’t set up skate park obstacles into his surfing. “For a long time, I had the idea of combining the skate park with the ocean,” says Wilson. “To take something I have so much fun with in the skate park with my profession as a surfer that’s going to challenge me.”
Jason Stevenson from JS Industries came on board to help with the project. His role was to create a board that was hard enough to surf, but still kept the weight at a minimum while meeting the requirements for maximum carbon fibre strength. There was also the challenge of making the rail just heavy enough that Wilson could slide across it while preventing it from moving too much in each set of waves that came through.
When it came time to surf the rail, Wilson was joined by a team that included a rescue diver as well as people who would move the rail back into position for each set. Andy Green, a professional photographer, also joined the team. “It’s been about as challenging as it could possibly be,” said Wilson. “As much as I thought there’d be so many controllables in the pool, there ended up being so many challenges too.” It took the better part of the allotted hour of pool time, but Wilson was finally able to surf the rail. “It was super fun,” said Wilson. “That’s the feeling I wanted to create with the wave.”
