It’s arrived, and so have you if you can afford it: the BMW i8; the first plug-in hybrid for the iconic brand. Set to compete with supercars for aesthetics and performance, with doors that open like wings and an über-low centre of gravity, the i8 can run for 35km purely on electricity, only switching out to fuel at 120kph. Zero to 60 can be achieved in 4.3 seconds, and all without touching a gear; yes folks this machine packs two automatic transmissions. With a combined horsepower of 360, the i8 weighs only 1500kg, due to the use of carbon fibre and Gorilla Glass, the stuff of smartphone screens. Due for release in 2015, you’d best start saving. Price estimates range north of US$125,000.
