Candela C-8 Hydrofoil Speedboat is a Tesla Model S on Water

If you were disappointed to discover that Candela’s innovative C-7 electric boat was never intended for mass production, then we have good news for you. Candela recently revealed the C-8 Hydrofoil Speedboat—a bigger, better version of the C-7. And this one is designed to hit a broader market, with plans to sell in the thousands.

The C-8 measures 28 feet and, as an electric boat, cruises through the waves without any emissions or noise. According to Candela, the carbon-fibre hull is more efficient than other more traditional planning boats. The next generation hydrofoil system also comes outfitted with a suite of sensors and avionics. What does that hydrofoil system do for you?

Aside from helping you achieve faster speeds, it also helps eliminates bumps and jolts as it effectively allows the boat to fly over the waves. In fact, those speeds top out at 30 knots. Or, if you prefer the more traditional, albeit bumpier, way of sailing, you can also retract the foils and use the C-8 like a “normal” boat. But why would you? Especially since Candela claims that the C-8 can foil for 50 nautical miles on a full charge of its 44 kWh battery pack. The pack takes about two hours to recharge.

The C-8 has a roomy cockpit with room for eight passengers. The space is decked out with a sunbed, a sofa, and three front-facing sculpted chairs. There’s also a premium audio system to help you relax even more (or party harder). The front cabin has accommodations to sleep two adults and two kids as well as a bathroom with a shower. Finally, you can get the C-8 with an optional hardtop.

You can pick up one for about $339,000. And don’t worry about there not being enough of them. Candela’s public relations and communications manager, Mikael Mahlberg, said in a statement, “We aim to sell thousands of C-8, and we think it will be the first electric boat that has the potential to outsell combustion engine boats in the premium class.”
