A Swedish company called Solar Impact is making a mark in the ocean cruiser world with their yacht. The yacht, which is still yet to be built, is completely gas and diesel free. Instead of relying on petroleum based fuels, the yacht will be powered solely by the sun. Giant power-generating solar panels literally cover the yacht, giving the craft an unlimited range—as long as there is sun to power the cells.

The yacht will be nearly 80 feet in length, and will offer three floors, with six cabins for guests. The main deck will be dominated by large social areas, while at the very top there will be a lounge area. According to the specs, this yacht will have over 1,300 horsepower and will be capable of cruising at 22 knots (though maintaining top speeds would actually drain power faster than the solar panels are able to replenish it).

Like any other electric motor, the yacht’s engines will be virtually noiseless. Should you wind up with dead batteries in the dead of night, you can always fire up the backup diesel engines to get out of a jam. Solar Impact is also claiming a form of artificial intelligence to help keep the yacht running.

There’s no detail on availability or on price as of yet, but as a first foray, Solar Impact is redefining what luxury yachting could be.
Check it out

Have you subscribed to Man of Many?
