BMW’s latest addition to their i series, the 2018 BMW i8 Roadster, takes us one step closer to saving the planet—and it does it without sacrificing the style, performance, and comfort that BMW is known for. The i8 is a plug-in hybrid based on eDrive technology that combines an all-electric motor with a TwinPower Turbo engine. That combination delivers 357 horsepower that can take you from zero to 60 in 4.2 seconds.
The technology of the i8 stands out. The electric half of the car can be charges in just two and a half hours (either at a public charging station or from a Level 2 home charging station). Thrust, braking, or the gas engine can also charge the battery. The electric motor powers the front axle, while the TwinPower Turbo three cylinder engine drives the rear. Combining the two gives that 350 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The i8 has four settings that let you optimize how these engines interact. Comfort mode balances performance and efficiency. Sport using a boost function from the electric motor to give you more power. Eco Pro uses either the all-electric or hybrid mode. If you’re looking for zero emissions, then eDrive will put you into all electric for a range of 15 miles with a max speed of 75 mph. The i8 delivers an impressive 76 miles per gallon—making you a green warrior with true style, performance, and comfort.
