The all-new fifth generation RAV4 looks to inspire action both on and off-road while offering Toyota’s safest, most capable and most refined mid-sized SUV to date. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the RAV4 and Toyota aims to spark a renewed sense of recreation and deliver the means of getting there.
Headlining the new RAV4 range is the 2.5 litre hybrid powertrain offering 160kW for two-wheel drive and 163kW for all-wheel drive. The 2WD variants use just 4.7L of fuel per 100km. The entry-level GX, mid-range GXL and top-of-the-line Cruiser grades are all available with the optional Hybrid setup.
Alternatively, all three grades are available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and innovative continuously variable transmission, or CVT for short.
There’s also a new Edge grade, possessing a 152kW 2.5-litre petrol engine mated to an eight-speed auto transmission that drives through a mechanical all-wheel-drive system. The Edge variant features more rugged looks to reflect its true recreational focus. Toyota recommends Edge grade for anyone looking to go deep into the bush or dunes.
A smart multi-terrain select system offers different modes for mud & sand, rock & dirt or snow, automatically adapting engine, transmission and brake systems for sure-footed security.
Safety features include advanced driver assistance and a camera and radar-based pre-collision safety system. This provides full autonomous emergency braking with day and night pedestrian detection and day cyclist detection to help ensure RAV4 drivers are aware of other road users. It’s included as standard on every model. There’s also active cruise control, road sign assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitor and more.
Comfort features include sat-nav, live traffic info, Bluetooth, digital radio, an 8-inch touchscreen and voice recognition. On GXL and above, there’s also dual-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, keyless smart entry and start and five USB outlets including four fast chargers. Within the Cruiser and Edge grades, the premium nine-speaker system is tuned by JBL. The Cruiser also benefits from heated leather seats, leather accents and 19-inch alloy wheels.
The two-level load space has a reversible deck board with carpet on one side and hard-wearing resin on the other to cater for wet gear. The load capacity is an impressive class-leading 580-litres.
The all-new Toyota RAV4 is priced from $30,640 for the GX Petrol 2WD manual configuration and scales right up to $47,140 for the Edge Petrol AWD Auto. There are plenty of suitable options between the two extremes.
