Volkswagen was thinking of endurance mountain biking when they came up with the Basecamp Concept. Alex Earle, Exterior Design Manager at Volkswagen Design Center California, explains, “The Basecamp Concept brings a go-anywhere attitude to the brand that is already synonymous with the road-trip culture.
“Whether you are taking on a series of challenging single-tracks with your favourite mountain bike or enjoying a relaxing evening under the night sky, the versatility of the Basecamp Concept provides ideal mobile solutions for just about any adventure.”
The Basecamp starts with a Volskwagen Atlas SEL Premium, with a 3.6-litre VR6 engine with 276 horsepower and an eight-speed transmission. It also features 4Motion all-wheel drive. From there, a bounty of additions round out the vehicle, such as a custom body and lift kits, custom wheels, all-terrain tires, and a roof rack with bike mounts and LED light bars.
By itself, the SUV is more than enough to get you to any trailhead. Of course, once you’re there, you’ll be glad that you decided to add on the off-road capable HIVE EX compact expedition trailer. The trailer has a queen size bed, pull out canopy, and a kitchenette that consists of a stove, sink, and a refrigerator/freezer combo.
Once you’re done with the trails, you’ll have a welcome place to come back to.
