“Out with the old.” It’s a common enough refrain, and now it’s being sung at the Renault-owned French automotive brand Alpine. The maker of the A110 sports car has announced that they will be transitioning to electric vehicles by the end of the decade. But there is a bit of a silver lining in this cloud for internal combustion engine fans. The A110 will feature the Renault Megane RS-sourced turbocharged 1.8-litre gasoline engine as well as a new naming system for their trim levels.
“2021 is an historic year for Alpine: it ventured into Formula 1, won the Grand Prix in Hungary and pushed ahead with the Endurance programme in the top category,” Laurent Rossi, CEO, Alpine said. “This is exactly what the new A110 range is all about: it’s crisper, pushes performance up a notch and captures what we are aiming for in the motor sports arena.”
Starting with the trim levels, moving forward the A110 Pure will now simply be called the A110 while the Legende will be known as the GT. The A110 S will keep its name, but will get a boost in horsepower to bring it to 300 and a bump in torque to bring it to 251 lb-ft. The flagship model of the line can hit 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds from the starting line and maxes out at 171 miles per hour. Brembo brakes provide the stopping power with 320mm discs on both axles.
The wheels measure in at 18 inches and are clad in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Alpine is also stiffening up the chassis and the suspension, which translates into sharper handling. The exhaust also gets updated to a sports system.
If the S isn’t your style, the GT may be, and fortunately, it gets the same upgraded engine. You’ll also get more amenities in the GT, like leather-wrapped comfort seats and front and rear park assist. Even if you opt for the base model, you’ll still get 252 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. All the models get a revised infotainment system for 2022.
“The New Alpine A110 S is the first A110 with a rear spoiler. We ran the A110 S through many wind tunnel tests, which showed that it needed substantial aerodynamic support to reach its maximum speed,” Antony Villain, Alpine design director said. “The Aero Kit is our answer to that challenge. The A110 S peaks at 275 km/h, has fantastic looks and is set to be a star on the tracks that takes on any race against the clock.”
Claiming one of the few remaining Alpine models to have a gas engine will run you €59,500 as a starting price for the base model. Going all out will jump the price up to €71,500 for the A110 S. Before the “in with the new” clause is invoked, you’ll want to get your hands on the “old” gas-powered A110, if for no other reason than to have a bit of history sitting in your garage.
