Meet the new breed of Aston Martin. To celebrate the marque’s return to the loftiest of auto-racing heights for the first time in over 60 years, the British icon has unveiled the all-new Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition, the most track-focused production Vantage to-date. And let’s just say, it’s been well worth the wait.
The new release comes just weeks after the automaker was unveiled as the Official Safety Car of Formula 1, which is set to make its debut at the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2021 later this month. The Vantage F1 Edition takes the upgrades implemented on that safety car and dials them up even further, offering unprecedented levels of performance and aerodynamics for the British manufacturer.
New chief executive officer, Tobias Moers, personally took up the task of leading the performance enhancements, designed to improve lap time performance in order to successfully carry out its role on the F1 track. The challenge here was doing so without compromising on-road capabilities and without the fitment of aggressively track-optimised tyres. Once they figured it out, however, Moers instructed the team to roll it out in the form of a production car and for that move, we now have the Vantage F1 Edition.
According to Aston Martin, the latest release achieves incremental improvements across the auto-only powertrain, chassis and aerodynamics to bring out more character, increase tactility and expand its outright capabilities. Under the hood, the F1 Edition cops a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, improving power by 25PS to a new maximum of 535PS. While the peak torque remains unchanged at 685Nm, it is sustained for longer to increase tractability and in-gear urgency.
The automaker has also enhanced the 8-speed automatic transmission, adding an optimised torque cut during upshifts that Aston Martin claims will reduce shift times and increase the feeling of directness and precision. For those taking the F1 Edition on the road, that won’t mean much, but Aston confirms the improvements are especially beneficial when driving on track.
“Performance is at the heart of every Aston Martin, but when it wears an F1® badge it has to be a truly exceptional car,” Moers said. “Vantage was already the most focused sports car in our range but in the development of our Official Safety Car of Formula 1, it had to be a true athlete: more powerful; more agile; more immediate and more exciting to drive. And – of course – quicker and more capable in a race-track environment.”
In terms of design, the underbody has modified heavily to improve steering feel and response, while also upping the wheels and tyres from 20” on the regular Vantage to 21” as standard for the Vantage F1 Edition. These new tyres have been specially designed for the F1 Edition by Pirelli, marking the first time the Vantage has been fitted with the 21″ accessories.
The new Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition is on sale now and is priced from £142,000 in the UK with deliveries scheduled to begin in May 2021. Even better, Aston Martin has confirmed the new release is on its way down under with local deliveries in ANZ will commence during Q4 2021.
