Ben Simmons

Ben Simmons Flexes on the Haters with New $2 Million Porsche

Ben Simmons has become one of the most polarizing players in the NBA. After a lacklustre performance in last season’s playoffs, the former number one draft pick has been criticised by teammates, coaches and pundits across the league. Feeling thrown under the bus, the Australian went to war with his Philadelphia 76ers front office, demanding to be traded anywhere else. Unfortunately, zero transfer deals have transpired, and Ben has yet to set foot on the court. So what does a 25-year-old multi-millionaire do with all the free time in the world? Shopping. And while his jump shot may be broken, Simmons has been making it rain on the roads, recently purchasing a rare $2 million Porsche 918 Spyder.

If the need for speed lives within, the 918 will scratch that itch. Officially recording a 0-60mph in 2.1sec, it was one of the fastest cars in the world until some bloke named Elon broke that record with his Tesla Model S Plaid. Under the hood, the plug-in hybrid convertible is powered by 4.6L V8 in combination with two electric motors that create 652kW and 1,280Nm of torque. Perhaps that’s just enough mechanical force to supplement the thrill of ballin’ out in front of packed stadiums?

As DMARGE rightly points out, Simmons’ model also features the upgraded ‘Weissach Package’. This weight-reducing aftermarket option shaves around 90 pounds off the car, bringing the total weight to 3,602 pounds. As a result, the process makes it 0.1 seconds faster from 0-60 mph, which DuPont Registry notes is even quicker than the Ferrari LaFerrari. Further to that, there are also carbon fibre swap-outs for the roof and other body components for great aerodynamics.

When it was originally released back in 2013, the Porsche 918 was priced at €781,000 in Europe (USD$845,000), but in years that have passed, the car has soared in value due to its rarity. Porsche only built a limited number of 918s between 2013 and 2015, and with their blistering speed, collectors have been clambering to get their hands on one. But Simmons isn’t the only baller to score one, his mentor and NBA superstar LeBron James is one of those collectors. However, the four-time champion doesn’t have the ‘Weissach Package’ (how embarrassing… lift your game, King!).

No stranger to sports cars, Ben’s 918 is the latest addition to an impressive list of whips. The Aussie point guard is the proud owner of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a 2021 Cadillac Escalade and two Ferrari 488s, plus other luxury rides. Say what you will about want about his efforts on the hardwood, but you have to admit Simmons has good taste in cars.
