Cadillac has already tried twice before to break into the emerging electric car market, first with the ELR and then with the CT6 plug-in hybrid. Their third attempt—the EV electric car—will be the “third time’s a charm” and not “three strikes and you’re out.”
“Cadillac’s EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world,” stated Steve Carlisle, the president of Cadillac. “It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility.”
Cadillac hasn’t shared much information about EV, other than two images. Most likely, the car will use GM’s “BEV3” next-generation electric vehicle as a platform for EV. VEB3 is a flexible base that can accommodate front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive configurations. It also has plenty of options for battery placement.
In terms of interior, Cadillac is free to live up to the promise of “the height of luxury.” The lack of a large engine and a driveshaft tunnel means that Cadillac can take that space to add in more luxury. While we don’t know much yet, judging from the images, Cadillac will be going with the classics—both of looks and comfort. It may have taken a few attempts to get here, but Cadillac is definitely showing up with their new EV Electric Car.
