Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur Restomod Concept

When Korean legend Hyundai embarked on a venture into luxury auto territory in the 1980s, it had plans of competing with the class-leading Daewoo Royale. Several false starts later and the brand instead chose to borrow the platform, technology, and internal configuration from Mitsubishi Motors to create its first flagship luxury beast, the Hyundai Grandeur. Boxy, boat-like and looking straight out of a Rick James fantasy, the car became an icon and in 2021, it has been reborn. The new Hyundai Grandeur Heritage Series takes fans back to the heyday of town cars in effortless ’80s style.

The new restomod concept comes straight from Hyundai HQ, playing up the unique heritage of the famous vehicle. As the history books explain, the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur was less an innovation and more of a rebadged take on the Mitsubishi Debonair. For the latest iteration, Hyundai has added an electric powertrain and several technical advancements, all while keeping the spirit alive.

On the outside, the Hyundai Grandeur Heritage Series concept keeps things relatively close to the original. The shape of the car remains the same, albeit with added modern “pixel” LED headlights and taillights. There is also a series of chrome upgrades across the mesh grille, flat wheel covers and trim, elevating this road warrior to the luxury heights it was originally destined for.

Inside, however, it’s a completely different story. Entirely overhauled, the interior cops a suite of next-gen technology and features, including a widescreen display with an integrated soundbar. Like all modern vehicles, the restomod also comes with a portrait command panel that allows the driver to control multimedia, driving functions and air conditioning.

Naturally, Hyundai has gone all out with the styling, best typified by the stunning ’80s-inspired leather upholstery. According to the brand, a mix of burgundy Alcantara and nappa leather has been used, but there is more here than meets that eye. There are infinity mirror roof lights and a virtual piano developed by Samick. Perhaps best of all, the interior comes complete with a hidden watch slot, perfectly styled in the campaign images with the 80s special Audemars Piguet.

While there is no word yet on when this one-off restomod will be available to view, it’s unlikely to see this stunning piece of nostalgic art leave Korea. If you are a fan of the bold and boxy, a trip might be in order.
