Hyundai’s Elevate Walking Car Concept Takes on the World’s Toughest Terrain

In the case of an emergency situation, getting help to the location in a quick manner is essential. Unfortunately, access isn’t always possible with traditional vehicles. That’s where Hyundai is hoping to make a difference with their Walking Car Concept.

Elevate, which is what Hyundai has named their Ultimate Mobility Vehicle, blends electric cars and robots to create a vehicle that can traverse terrain that would block even the most capable of off-road vehicles.

Elevate has robotic legs that have five degrees of freedom as well as wheel hub propulsion motors. Using the robotic legs, Elevate can “walk,” mimicking the gates of both mammalian and reptilian life forms, even being able to move in any direction.

Thanks to the hub motors, the legs can fold up into a stowed position to enable a drive mode, allowing Elevate to drive at highway speeds just like other vehicles.

Imagine what Elevate can do. It can speed down the highway to an emergency situation, and then, when it gets to a blocked road or has to traverse down a canyon, it can switch to robotic legs and “walk” to where it needs to go.

Elevate can climb a five-foot wall, step over a five-foot gap, and achieve a 15-foot wide track width—all while keeping its body, and passengers, perfectly level.

Emergency situations, as well as everyday difficult situations, may have just met their transportation match.
