OK, down to brass tacks first. The McLaren GT Luggage Collection is going to run you $15,400 to buy the whole set. But, if you’re buying the matching McLaren (for around $210,000) to go along with that set, you’re probably not worried about the price tag on a suitcase.
The collection is actually the first time that McLaren is jumping into the luggage as accessory racket, and they came in firing on all cylinders. “Each piece of luggage has been designed and developed to conform to our highest standards of engineering, quality and exclusivity,” states McLaren’s web site. Debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the collection consists of four pieces: a garment case (valued at $2,300), a weekend bag ($2,500), a cabin bag ($3,800), and a full-size golf bag ($6,800). What could possibly demand such high prices for luggage? Well, the bags are all made of the same leather with the same stitching as the interior of a McLaren GT. The bags come in three color options to match up with your supercar—Pioneer Black, Luxe Black, and Luxe Porcelain. Those colors were specifically chosen to complement the GT’s launch colors of Namaka Blue, Burnished Copper, and Verdian Green. Each bag is also designed to fit into very specific areas of the GT to ensure that they don’t encroach on passenger space or on visibility. Though given that one of the selling points McLaren shared about the GT at the Goodwood Festival of Speed was that the car had 20.1 cubic feet of storage space, one would think that the bags would fit just fine anyway.
The bags were all designed by the McLaren Special Operations department, and while the car may be built in England, the bags are all hand-assembled in Italy. The collection is available as a set or as individual pieces now through McLaren dealers.
