You know, some things just strike you as funny, like when ABT Sportsline, the racing and auto-tuning company out of Allgau, Germany, says, “Lamborghini is probably the Audi and VW Group’s sportiest marque.”
There’s no “probably” about it, surely. Lamborghini definitely has the title of sportiest marque. Fortunately, the pairing of the Lamborghini Urus and ABT Sportstuning is no laughing matter.
On its own, the Urus SUV is already an impressive performer. It comes with a V8 bi-turbo engine with 650 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque as standard. It can hit 189.5 miles per hour. What more could you want of an SUV? ABT thought there was more that could be done, and they added in their ABT Engine Control, which boosted the Urus’ horsepower to 710 and torque to 910. That’s more than double the performance of Lamborghini’s famed Countach LP400S V12.
The new stats are impressive enough that the Urus can keep pace with a brand-new Porsche 911 Carrera S. With ABT’s help, the Urus is going from 0 to 100 in 3.4 seconds.
ABT isn’t the only one fiddling around with the Urus. Lamborghini is rumoured to be working on a high-performance version of the SUV that will be called the Urus Performante. That new model takes a page from the stripped-out ST-X race car concept, adapting some of those parts to turn them into road versions. The news fuels fire to the battle of supremacy in the “Super SUV” race, which includes entrants like Bentley with the Bentayga Speed and Porsche with is Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid.
Regardless of the rumours, tuners like ABT will continue to play with the existing models, and with 120 years of experience, ABT has plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Some of those tricks might include changes to the suspension, exhaust, and aerodynamics.
