Mercedes-Benz Enters the Luxury SUV class with Maybach SUV
With Bentley producing the Bentayga, Rolls-Royce creating the Cullinan, and Range Rover releasing the SVAutobiography, Mercedes-Benz was pretty much obligated to come out with a luxurious SUV to keep up with the competition. What they’ve really accomplished, however, is to blow past the competition with their new 2020 Mercedes-Maybach SUV GLS 600 4MATIC.
What’s different about the GLS 600 is really in the back seat. This SUV is perhaps meant to be more of a car that you are driven in rather than that you drive yourself. Where you would find the second and third row of seats in a standard GLS, the 600 has deleted those seats and replaced them with a three-seater setup. The new set up features an adjustable heated, cooled, and massaging outer seats with extra legroom. Optionally, you can select a two-seater setup that has a center console. The back also has extendable folding tables and a refrigerator for champagne bottles. Maybach contributes branded champagne flutes as an option.
The back also has a panoramic sunroof, seven-inch tablets, and a completely separate air conditioning system with extra vents. You’ll also find a wireless charging station and heated and cooled cup holders. The seats are separated from the luggage section by a wooden parcel shelf. All of the features of the normal GLS are still there, including nine USB ports, a 115-volt power outlet, and a 64-color ambient lighting system. The GLS 600 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and it plays your music on a Burnmester sound system. In a final detail, the car will lower itself and extend out an illuminated running board when the rear doors open to make entering and exiting the car easier.
For power, Mercedes enlisted a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 550 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a 48-volt electrical system that delivers an additional 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The GLS 600 can hit 60 from zero in just 4.8 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 miles per hour.
Mercedes-Benz left out no details on this luxury SUV. Considering all that is offered, it’s pretty clear that the Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS 600 is ready to claim top spot in the luxury SUV market.
