Four-wheel-drives used to be strictly synonymous with rugged off-roading are now just as renowned for their luxurious design, and we most definitely aren’t complaining. Driving the white Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic down to the snow in Thredbo, it turned heads the entire way. But of course, this versatile SUV is far more than just an elegant head-turner. It’s also a sleek and sturdy champ, which navigated the snowy terrain around us with the greatest of ease. Let’s break down the Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic in more detail below.
On the design front, the Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic simply oozes with visual allure. Featuring sporty curves, a unique bumper design, black contrast roof, flush handles and 18″ 15-spoke wheels with sparkle silver finish, the SUV falls right in line with the newest luxury trend. Also featured are sleek LED headlights, which automatically turn on as dusk approaches. Put it all together and you have yourself one truly breathtaking vehicle. It’s then no wonder that so many people stopped to compliment us on our new, albeit temporary, ride.
As one might expect, the 2018 Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic offers a number of customisation packages, allowing you to choose from a variety of engines. At the baseline is a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, which gets the car from 0-62 mph in about 8.9 seconds, reaches a top speed of just under 120 mph, and produces 430 nm of torque. That’s joined by 8-speed automatic transmission, coil suspension, All Wheel Drive, and a slew of adaptive dynamics. As mentioned, it only gets better from there, depending on how much cash you’re in the mood to spend.
Speaking of adaptive dynamics, the 2018 Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic definitely takes its name to heart. That is to say, the SUV really goes big on useful features, amounting to the utmost tier of safety and control, and not just on the upgraded models. No matter which variant you land on, expect things like autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, terrain response, hill launch assist, hill descent control, roll stability control, and much, much more. As a result, you feel like you can take this sporty stunner anywhere, and retain dominance over the surrounding terrain. To that end, the SUV handled beautifully in the snows of Thredbo, although the automatic electronic door handles that pop-out did freeze up in the cold conditions. But hey, we’re still here to tell the tale.
The dual themes of luxury and utility most definitely continue inside, and we’re not just talking about the adjustable seats of Luxtec and suede-cloth, or the satin chrome gearshift paddles. For instance, the car features two-zone climate control, which allows you to set two separate temperatures for the respective driver and front passenger areas. Also, the rear-view mirror includes an auto-dimming feature.
At the front of the interior is a brilliant infotainment system with both analog dials and a thoroughly modern TFT display. That’s accompanied by a premium sound system, which pumps 250W of crisp sound pumping through 8 speakers on the standard model. Additionally featured are Bluetooth connectivity, voice control, an intrusion sensor, rear parking aid, and keyless entry.
Between its sleek and sporty design, abundance of safety features, and luxurious interior, the 2018 Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic delivers everything you can ask of it. Okay, okay, maybe not everything, like the deep European fluffy powder we were hoping for in NSW. Nevertheless, there are far worse ways to conquer the nearest terrain. And that’s just with the baseline model. Opt for an upgrade and the onlookers won’t just gaze, they might start to drool.
