Swoopy Volkswagen ID.7 Sedan Lights Up CES 2023
With the Passat sedan officially gone, the future of the flagship sedan within the Volkswagen stable lands on the swoopy shoulders of the new ID.7. Unveiled at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, the ID.7 is draped in an interesting camouflage and accentuated by light effects created through electroluminescence. That said, don’t expect to see this car at your nearest VW showroom. Instead, the full production version will mirror the ID.Aero concept, with the electric sedan scheduled to go into production in the second quarter of 2023. As for an Australian debut, the Volkswagen IS.7 production sedan looks possible for next year.

Designed to take on the likes of the Tesla Model 3, the swoopy styling is unlike any other sedan from Volkswagen while the overall design theme is reminiscent of a Sportback rather than a usual sedan shape. Sadly, Volkswagen has remained tight-lipped on the powertrain details but we expect a single motor/RWD configuration along with a more powerful dual-motor/AWD layout.
Despite the scant details regarding the motor, Volkswagen did promise an impressive range estimate of 700km per charge (WLTP) for the ID.7, which would put it in the top echelon of electric vehicles. Based on the MEB platform within the Volkswagen Group, the ID.7 has short overhangs and a long wheelbase to liberate more space on the inside.

Rather crucially, based on customer feedback on the current ID models, the interior has been tweaked to be less dependent on touch surfaces and new air conditioning controls being integrated into the first level of the infotainment system. There is also a physical slider for the temperature control (finally!) and the air vents are ‘smart’ as they sense when to heat/cool the car when the key is close.
Elsewhere, you get a massive 15-inch touchscreen along with a minimalistic layout while gadgetry like an augmented reality head-up display is also present. With big sedans losing favour in almost all big markets, the ID.7 is the spiritual successor of the Passat but adhering to how the market tastes have changed over time.
